About Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)
Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) recognizes the academic achievement of college students and provides opportunities for its members to grow as scholars and leaders. Established in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa has a presence on almost 1,300 community college campuses in 11 nations. The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges in 1929. With its headquarters in Jackson, Mississippi, more than 3.5 million students have been inducted since 1918, with approximately 250,000 active members in the nation’s community colleges, making Phi Theta Kappa a true catalyst among members and colleges.
Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society of two-year colleges that enables active members to apply for PTK scholarships at four-year colleges. Phi Theta Kappa members are recognized for their academic achievement as well as their community service, fellowship, and leadership. Navarro College has two Phi Theta Kappa Chapters: Zeta Omicron and Beta Upsilon Chi.
Many opportunities exist for members of the Zeta Omicron and Beta Upsilon Chi chapters to develop leadership skills. Members may be elected to hold any one of seven officer positions for a one-year term. Leadership development is also encouraged among members who lead appointed task committees towards the fulfillment of service projects within the college and community.
The benefits of Phi Theta Kappa membership include recognition by wearing a gold stole and tassel at the Navarro College commencemement ceremony. In addition, membership in the society is noted on the student's official transcripts and it is embossed on their diploma. There is also extensive opportunity for scholarship awards exclusively for Phi Theta Kappa members.
